In Kochi, the state government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be paid to Sojish of Nettoor, following an order from the state human rights commission. The order, issued by the additional chief secretary of the home department, mandates that the compensation be deducted from the salary of the accused former SI of Panangad in three equal payments. This decision came after Justice JB Kosi, the chairman of the commission, issued the order in response to Sojish's complaint. Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was allegedly assaulted by former Panangad SI Vipin AB. The complaint states that Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former SI without proper authorization while he was undergoing treatment at a hospital. Subsequently, a case was filed against the SI, and the commission ordered a compensation to be provided. Although a probe was conducted resulting in departmental action against the SI, no compensation was initially awarded. Upon discovering that the SI failed to present a counter-argument before the commission's final decision, the government intervened and directed the payment of Rs 25,000 to Sojish.
